Before starting her doctorate in law, she worked in a variety of different mental health and social care settings including: assistant clinical psychologist, assistant research psychologist, support worker, care co-ordinator, social inclusion worker, family worker and learning support assistant. Her experiences working in health and social care led her to an interest in the legal safeguards that could be used to protect the rights and dignity of adults in need of community care services and their carers. 

Lucy writes the blog www.thesmallplaces.blogspot.com and has an in depth knowledge of how the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberties safeguards apply to the lives of people with learning disabilities.
