LEADING IN HOUSING, SUPPORT AND RIGHTS FOR PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES

There is an Alternative

Learning Disability England (formally The Housing and Support Alliance) has launched a programme of support for commissioners and providers to help them move people with learning disabilities on from Assessment and Treatment Units (ATUs) and/or to support local people to remain in their communities with the housing and support that works for them. There is an Alternative report cover image

In response to Winterbourne View H&SA (formerly Association for Supported Living) wrote a report There is an Alternative that showed how people who are labelled as challenging can live good lives within their communities, often at less cost than institutional alternatives. There is an Alternative has been widely promoted as the way forward for how we support people labelled as challenging.

There is an Alternative is a programme of support developed by Learning Disability England. It is designed to enable commissioners and providers to develop person centred approaches to housing and support for people with learning disabilities who have behaviour that challenges. What is unique about this programme is that LDE members, commissioners and providers who have a track record in supporting people successfully, will be proving support to the commissioners and providers that need it.

The programme

  • Is a practical approach to helping people living in ATU’s and health care facilities move into the housing and support that works for them.
  • Develops local housing and support services so that people with learning disabilities can avoid inpatient services where possible.
  • Is flexible and cost effective, built around the needs of the commissioner and provider.
  • Uses the skills of providers, commissioners and experts who are already helping people live successfully in their communities.
